About

From College Back to the Classroom

Let’s be real for a second. College is about getting that tiny, square, beige piece of FedEx paper with your name on it.

It comes to you after four years of tears, tantrums and all nighters. Post graduation, you may get that dream job that you’ve worked tirelessly hard for, or end up washing dishes at your local Applebee’s. Whatever the outcome, it’s social protocol that you get that degree.

I shouldn’t be so cynical. I enjoyed my classes and my major, I still have fun with the life-long friends I met over those 4 years. Yes, I AM relieved that those 4 years led me to a career right out of college. There are just some nights where being a well-known published author is a way better deal. Scratch that; every night.

As a post-graduate elementary school teacher, I come fully prepared to share with you the adventures of school, my short stories and poetry, as well as my personal life. It may not make you a millionaire, but it might still tickle you in that special place.

  1. I say this in part as a high-functioning autistic, but I think I preferred high school over college.

I put this down to two factors:

    1. The “big fish in a small pond” argument.
    2. Financially, I got lucky, because my dad’s a professor and I went to the same school. But at the same time, I think it made me a little complacent in terms of the the tasks related to “adulthood.”

  3. Thank you for dropping by my blog and wow College and writing a novel…go for it, In some sense I wish I had started or finished is more to the point earlier in life and yet so many like me start later and have life experience..I have benefited greatly by joining a writers group who have mentored and encouraged me greatly and without whom I would not have anything published so I would say follow your dreams and accept any advice you can..not neccesarily take it..you will learn what you want and what to discard gratefully because you never know…Good Luck 🙂

  4. Thanks for checking out my blog! I’m a newbie when it comes to blogging so it’s nice to see that so far I’m not doing to bad a job at it haha. Your blog is very inspiring and relevant seeing as I am about to enter college. My mom went to school for teaching and she’s been teaching elementary school ever since she got her degree. And she had to overcome a lot of personal and financial hardships during college. It was a struggle for her but she managed to make it out alive as a stronger person. She always says she knows the hardships she encountered in college were worth it, when she walks into her classroom and everyday and sees her kids. If she can do it, you can too! 🙂

  5. Hey thanks for checking out my blog! I’m a newbie at blogging but it’s great to see people actually liking the stuff I post haha. Your blog is very inspiring and relevant, seeing as I am about to head off to college. My mom went to school to become an elementary school teacher and she has been teaching ever since she got her degree. And the odds were not in her favor at all- she had to financially support herself, deal with some past demons, and she was just lost basically. But if she can do it, you can! She always says that every hardship she encountered in college was worth it when she steps into her classroom everyday and sees her kids. From having a mom as a teacher, I can see that It’s a hard profession no doubt but ultimately rewarding. 🙂

  6. Angela,
Thank you for your visit and liking my post.
Juggling your studies while pursuing your writing is quite an undertaking. I wish you much luck and success.
I’m a retired secondary school teacher and high shool athletics coach. What you say is true; no other profession will put you in touch with, as in my case, thousands of unique individuals over your career. And the true satisfaction occurs when you are told, by even just one, that you made a difference in their life.
Thanks again for your visit and feel free to do so again. I’ll be following and maybe one day can swap stories.
    -Alan

  7. Hello Angela, I really like your post ‘Why the odds are in your favor. You are a down to earth person and you should always follow the path that is good for you. Being a teacher is a very rewarding job and if you love that, it is not even work. I have a Facebook page that deals with health, wealth and life 101 and I believe that you keep a positive attitude and face each day with a smile and be happy all the time. You should always live with gratitude too. Some say you can’t be like that, I know anyone can! Have a Wonderful day! Jim

  8. Thanks for liking my blog. College is a worthwhile pursuit. I know quite a few authors and they all worked at something before they were able to write full-time and some still do. Good luck.

  10. When I was in college (UC Berkeley), my father told me it was the best time of my life. I think I yelled at him, “Are you crazy?” It was one midterm and paper after another. In retrospect, I can’t say I now agree with him, but it was an invaluable experience and opened my eyes to the world, both past and present. No regrets. So I wish you all the best, both with school and with your novel. And many thanks for following my blog, WordThoughts.

  11. Thanks for stopping by my blog, Angela. Hang in there with school. I understand how uncomfortable it feels now, and exhausting. I worked three jobs while I was going to school full time. We each need to find our own way. For me, although my degree didn’t translate into the career I aimed for, I’ve never regretted the effort it took for one second. In looking back with the benefit of hindsight, I realize it was more about the process then the finished product – not unlike making art. Write on, Angela, you can do it!
