Journal Entry #17

~Bear Mountain~

Yet again, my adventurous side has come out to play. 22727_10206499330072287_1798133492214597374_n

Bear Mountain is about an hour away from us. Em, Nattles and I hiked up the “Appalachian trail” to the top where we spotted three state lines and four states in total. We were even able to spot the New York Skyline.

11205005_10206499321952084_5637178376758903851_nI never went hiking before this, although I always wanted to. My dad was never that into it and my mom is terrified of heights. My sister is just uninterested in anything that doesn’t have to do with a computer screen. Not to mention we don’t really live near mountains back home.

It was so freeing to battle the rocks and trees in order to reach our goal. Three miles up and three miles down, it was worth every second. The most wonderful part, passing by a stream of flowing water clean enough to wash away sins. We let it trickle down our arms and legs, rubbing us like silk. We held out our palms and gulped it down. The purest water I have ever tasted.

I’m extremely happy that we did this. Making it to the top was a great accomplishment, considering how tired we were a quarter of the way through. I wish I could go hiking more often, and maybe I could. I’ll do some more research on other trails near me. looking out over the tops of mountains, I felt like I could conquer the world. Something inside of me felt complete, that nature girl whose always dying to escape real life.

  1. There is nothing quite as exhilarating as a spirited climb. It has been some time since I made such a trek. Full of arthritis, my walking efforts are much more confined to relatively level surfaces and I go for a good pace and distance. Embrace the outdoors always. Our beautiful natural surroundings will forever bring you peace of heart, mind and soul as none other.

  2. Looks lovely. Lucky you. Isn’t it great when you can see so many places from one vantage point. I remember how excited I was when, years ago, I was standing on the ‘y’ shaped junction that splits the borders of Austria, Hungary and Slovakia from each other. I could play hopscotch between 3 very different countries.
